History buffs and aircraft enthusiasts will love the Liberty Aviation Museum in Port Clinton. The museum’s concept was created in 1991 by a group of volunteers who shared an interest in World War II aircraft. After years of collecting and restoring historic planes, and with the coordination of similar organizations, the museum finally found a permanent home at the Erie-Ottawa County Regional Airport, and was opened to the public in 2012.

The museum’s vast collection includes a vintage World War II B-25 Mitchell Bomber, restored to flyable condition. The B-25 is flown at various airshows around the country. Other featured aircraft include the Ford Tri-Motor, the TBM Avenger – a vintage torpedo bomber, and a Model 75 Stearman. Because Liberty is an actual working museum, its collection changes depending on show schedules, private collections on loan, and visiting aircraft from other museums.

In addition to warplanes, Liberty also features military watercraft and land vehicles, such as tanks, Jeeps, and motorcycles. Visitors will also see displays of military uniforms and aircraft garb. And no trip to the museum is complete without enjoying a meal at the Tin Goose Diner, a classic lunch wagon built in 1949. For more information, visit www.libertyaviationmuseum.com.
